Lymes and Anaplasmosis 

Lymes and Anaplasmosis are dangerous tick-borne diseases that are very common in our area. Not only seen in sporting dogs we have also identified infected/exposed pets that are considered “back yard” and “only go outside to do their duty” pets. Over the last few years our statistics tell us that lyme and anaplasma infections far outnumber infections by Heartworm!

Protection of our pets against infection by lyme and anaplasma hinges on:

 ~Tick and Flea preventative for all pets with products such as Nexgard and Frontline

~Lyme vaccination for pets with a higher exposure risk as well as those that have been exposed (and treated)

~Yearly testing for lyme/anaplasma and heartworm with the 4DX Test (canine heartworm/lyme/anaplasma/ehrlichia)

Dental Health

Dental disease (plaque and tarter buildup,gingivitis, periodontitis) is one of the most frequently diagnosed problems in our pets. Aquadent (a water additive) can be part of the solution. Puppy Obedience

Preventing Heartworn Disease in Cats

Yes, cats can and do get Heartworm disease.  However, according to the American Heartworm Society Symposium, "Feline heartworm disease is unique compared to its canine counterpart.  It is difficult to distinguish from other conditions, such as asthma and other respiratory diseases, including those caused by other parasites."  Because of this, the AHS, AAHA, AVMA and AAFP, all recommend year-round heartworm preventative for cats.  Also, a study published in JAVMA found that 25% of cats diagnosed with heartworm disease were identified as indoor-only cats. So, although not as common as in dogs, prevention as always is easier and worth a pound of cure!  Revolution is the product we recommend for prevention of heartworm disease (and also fleas, ear mites, round and hook worms) in cats.  Talk with us if you have any questions.
